Increasing Site Traffic and Rankings for Your Blog

I thought today I'd talk a little bit about the business behind Bandit Talks. Well, not that there's any real business here more or less just the logistics of site traffic. People come to Blogs either from links on other sites or through searching engines like Google or Yahoo!.

Aside from the links that my Blog buddies have so graciously placed on their sites, a lot of visitors come to Bandit Talks by searching for the following key words:
  • Is Ryan Seacrest Gay? - Uh, yeah! Don't you remember? He was my future husband (read more). I've since found other interests.
  • Daniel Kucan. Is Daniel Kucan gay?- He actually reads my Blog. You'll have to read his response to a previous post I wrote and tell me what you think. For those of you coming late, he's the hot hunk (not Ty Pennington...although he's hot too) from Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Speaking of Ty, occasionally I'll get the Ty Pennington gay hit.
  • Danvers, Massachusetts, CAI, Danvers, Explosion Danvers - These are the people looking to find out information about the explosion that happened in Danvers a couple weeks back. News bulletin: Rumor has it that if the propane tank company next door hadn't emptied there tanks a couple days before we'd be looking at deaths in the thousands.
  • Ace Young Gay. Is Ace Young Gay? - The American Idol heart throb from the 2006 season? There's a little bit of an increase in these search words lately most likely due to his recent album release.
  • And last but not least Bandit Talks - Yes, some people out there are actually searching for my Blog.
There are more key words but those have been the major ones lately.

Now other than posting gay porn (I refuse) what are ways to increase Blog traffic? It's all about search engine optimization - having your links in other, more popular web sites. I guess I haven't spent too much time doing trying to do this. Well, I guess I could do more. What is it with us? We always want more. Can't we ever be happy with what we have?

Some of my other Blog friends get a lot more traffic. For instance, Will over at Designer Blog gets about 100 hits a day. Lately I've been averaging about 70. Some sites get that in an hour! Then again a year ago I only got about 10 a week!

Anyway, if you have any tips or tricks, let me know.

Actually, the number of my hits has been going up steadily, starting some time in mid-November. Today my site meter said 148 a day. Since I don't show anything pornograhic (although you'll find a lot of great-looking men about 3/4 undressed) or speak in detail about my sex life, I know I'll never pull in the big numbers. I prefer to think of my readership as small but choice. It's one of my harmless delusions--work with me here, Rick. :-)

I've found that he best way to develop a wider referral base and to pick up more readers/commenters is to surf the blogs and find people through the comments they leave on blogs you like. Check their blogs and when you find one you like, leave a comment. If you like it very much, put a link onto your own blog and tell the blogger. Also, try to get a link from sites like Magmozine, Nightcharm, Best Gay Blogs, etc.

Lately I get a lot of referrals from Parterre Box, an opera gossip site out of New York City, and also from a site called bandit talks--three or four a day, thank you very much Rick!

You know, I've never really thought about increasing visits to my blog. Maybe I should...*contemplates deeply*

I have learned that the stat-counter doesn't mean s***. Stay true to your heart because I love your blog, and it is awesome the way it is. Don't become like me and have a stalker (MiKell) who ruins it.

I write my blog pretty much just for myself and my good friends but when I put up a current event phenomenon like Britney Spears crotch shots (I didn't post the shots, just linked to them), I can't believe the amount of people who google looking for stuff like that. My count tripled for a couple of days just because of stupid old Britney!

IMO the only reason to go out of your way to increase your blog traffic is if you want to make money with sites like Amazon, etc.

It is a long standing tradition in blog world Rick - a meaningful post gets you 10 visits and 2 posts - dick and ass get you 100 visits and 30 comments...

It is your blog - post what you like and what is in your heart... do you really want 500 guys a day who could care less who you are or what you have to say because they are there to see skin?

I think we all cycle in our readership - kinda like a "share the wealth" thing...

Good points my friends...very good points. I'll be true to myself. That's always the best course of action.

I'm excited that anyone reads what I write. These days I'm getting about 16 hits a day, which I think is great. In the meantime, just keep doing what your doing, the readers will find you.
